Ontario roofing contract and cooling-off rights

Home-signed roofing contracts, immediate work and cooling-off protections explained.

Signing at home does not automatically end your rights

Ontario's official consumer guidance says that when a home renovation or repair contract worth $50 or more is signed in the consumer's home, a 10-calendar-day cooling-off period generally applies. The consumer may cancel during that period for any reason without cancellation fees. If work or materials were already supplied, reasonable compensation may still be owed. The precise contract category and circumstances matter.

What if demolition starts immediately?

Starting roof removal immediately can create strong practical pressure: the home is exposed and the homeowner may feel unable to stop. Ontario's guidance states that work starting during the cooling-off period does not automatically remove the cancellation right, although compensation for work and materials may be required. A signed agreement alone does not determine whether sales representations or pressure were lawful.

Unfair practices and inaccurate claims

Ontario warns of roof inspection pitches followed by claims that immediate expensive repairs are required. A materially misleading claim, unnecessary replacement recommendation, or unfair sales practice may create additional remedies. A high price alone is not proof of a violation; compare scope, materials and independent assessments. A legal professional should review whether any statutory exception, notice requirement or limitation applies.

Deadlines can be decisive

Ontario describes additional remedies for qualifying misleading representations and improperly documented agreements that can involve a one-year period. Deadlines for specific claims differ and can depend on the date the agreement was made and when the conduct occurred; a general civil limitations analysis is different from a statutory cancellation deadline. Do not assume an older agreement is automatically enforceable or automatically cancellable. Seek prompt Ontario legal advice if the transaction occurred months ago.

Documents to preserve

Keep every signed page, the original scope, change orders, deposit records, invoices, receipts, photographs before and after demolition, messages, advertisements, warranty documents and any record of claims that waiting would be dangerous.
