Challenge a disputed roofing bill in Ontario

Evidence, independent review, complaints and legal guidance after disputed roof work.

It may still be possible to challenge a completed roofing job

Completion and payment do not, by themselves, resolve whether the contractor made misleading claims, charged for work not delivered or complied with consumer law. Outcomes depend on evidence, the contract and legal deadlines. No website or AI review can promise a refund or determine fraud.

Build a complete evidence file

  1. Record the timeline: original requested repair, inspection, new recommendation, signature, demolition, payments and completion.
  2. Retain all quotes, contract pages, invoices, financing documents, receipts and warranty documents.
  3. Keep texts, emails, call notes, photographs and the contractor's statements about urgency or risk.
  4. Obtain an independent roofer's written assessment of roof size, materials and completed scope if feasible and safe.
  5. Ask the contractor in writing to explain the diagnosis, quantities, costs, extras and any work outside the original request.

Review value without inventing a fair price

A large amount—for example, $45,000 on a small residential roof—may warrant careful questioning, but is not automatically excessive. Roof complexity, materials, layers, structural work, access, disposal, permits and documented repairs must be considered. AI can organize quotations and flag missing evidence, not certify fraud or set a binding local price. Independent quotes should cover equivalent scopes.

Ontario complaint pathway

Ontario recommends contacting the business first, preferably in writing, with the specific complaint and requested resolution. If unresolved, submit a free complaint through Consumer Protection Ontario, including contracts, invoices and communications. The Ministry may review, mediate or investigate as appropriate; it does not guarantee recovery. Consumer Protection Ontario: 1-800-889-9768.

Get legal advice promptly

If significant money is involved or the signature dates are near a statutory deadline, consult an Ontario consumer-protection lawyer as soon as possible. Ask specifically about the contract's classification, cancellation, unfair practices, notice, remedies and time limits. Retain originals and send copies for any complaint.
